私はシチリア交響楽団と共演するサンドロ・ルッソさんのコンサートに招待していただきました。それは、彼の出身地であるシチリアで行われるというものでした。彼の演奏をライブで見ることも、シチリアを訪れることも初めてでした。私はイタリアが大好きで、そこでサンドロさんに会えることはこの上のない喜びでした。

コンサートは7月4日、5日、6日の三夜にわたり、パレルモにある公立図書館のアトリウムで行われることになっていました。彼は、最も演奏が困難と言われているピアノ協奏曲のひとつ、ラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲第3番を演奏する予定でした。

1年前のことになりますが、私はたまたまインターネットを通じてサンドロ・ルッソさんのことを知りました。YouTubeで彼のビデオを見て、最初は、彼は大変な超絶技巧のピアニストだと思いましたが、私には彼のレパートリーのいくらかは奇抜な感じがしました。しかし、彼のCDのひとつを聞いた瞬間、彼が正統派の叙情的でロマンチックなピアニストであることを感じ取りました。彼は古典であろうと現代曲であろうと、あらゆる種類の作品を、違ったムードで、また素晴らしい技術を持って演奏できる特別な才能があるのです。実際、彼の音楽はとても美しいです。例えば、彼のスクリャービンの幻想曲の演奏は天国的な響きで、私は涙してしまいます。私は隠された宝物を見つけた思いがしました。そうして私は彼の音楽に興味を持ちました。

私はずっと彼の演奏をライブで聞きたいと望んでいました。そしてとうとう私の願いはシチリアで叶えられました。ステージは歴史的建造物の屋外のアトリウムに設置されていました。サンドロさんのご両親や古い友人たちや、ニューヨークから飛行機で駆けつけてこられた彼のファンまでそこにいました。

サンドロさんの演奏は常に安定していて情熱的でした。そしてその会場は建物に囲まれていて、良い音響でした。しかし彼はたくさんの困難に耐えなければなりませんでした。ピアノはスタインウェイ・ハンブルグでしたが、サンドロさんは、そのピアノはその独特のラフマニノフの協奏曲を演奏できる理想的なピアノではない、とおっしゃっていました。それで彼は自分の指先を痛めるほどそのピアノと戦わなくてはなりませんでした。

また、屋外のコンサートでは、時に、予期せぬ出来事が起こるものです。最初の夜には猫の鳴き声が聞こえました。三日目の夜にはカモメの鳴き声を聞きました。それはまあよいのです。二日目の夜、コンサートに来ていたすべての人に、コンサート中にどこからともなく異国情緒的な音楽と歌声が聞こえました。それは聴衆を非常に困惑させました。三日目の夜、その迷惑な音楽が再び不愉快に聞こえてきました。それは、第一楽章の後、指揮者が第二楽章に進むのさえ止めてしまいました。私はサンドロさんの集中力が途切れるのではないかと、本当に心配しました。でも彼はそれを失うことはありませんでした。しばらくの中断の後、協奏曲は続けられました。サンドロさんとオーケストラは、ここ数日の間に互いに多くのことを学び、この三日目は非常に素晴らしい演奏でした。

サンドロさんの演奏は情熱的でしたが、彼は常に冷静でした。彼は一音一音を大切にし、それを流れるような美しい音楽に創り上げました。彼は決してわざとらしい態度で聴衆を煽ることはありませんでした。ただひたすら音楽と向き合い、ラフマニノフのロマンティシズムと叙情性とを表現することに努めているように見えました。その結果、彼は聴衆からたくさんの拍手とBravo!の喝采を受けていました。

聴衆は毎晩、彼にアンコールの演奏を求めました。一日目の夜はGluck-Sgambati: Melodie from "Orpheus"でした。それはとてもロマンチックで聴衆はうっとりとしました。二日目の夜はショパンのパガニーニの思い出を演奏しました。三日目の夜は、ヴェルティとリストによる「リゴレット」パラフレーズでした。この作品は、彼がピアノを本当に歌わせることができる、ということを明らかにしました。聴衆のみんなは、彼が真のヴィルトゥオーゾであることを理解しました。

この三夜を聞いても、私にはまだ足りない気持ちがします。彼は私にもっと聞きたいという気持ちにさせました。私からサンドロさんにたくさんのBravo!を差し上げたいと思います。




I was invited to Sandro's concert with the "Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana", as it was going to be held in his homeland, Sicily. It was my first time to see his performance live and also visiting Sicily was my first time. I love Italy and meeting with Sandro there was a sheer bliss!

The concert was supposed to be held for three nights, on July 4th, 5th and 6th at the "Atrio Biblioteca Comunale" in Palermo. He was going to perform the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.3, which is known as one of the toughest piano concertos to play.

Well, a year ago, I happened to find Sandro's profile through Internet. I watched his videos on YouTube and at first I thought he is very virtuosic. Some of his repertoire seemed bizarre to me. However, the moment I listened to one of his CDs, I sensed he is an orthodox, lyrical and romantic pianist. He has an extraordinary ability to play various kinds of pieces, whether classical or contemporary, with different moods and exceptional skills. Indeed, his music is very beautiful. For example, his rendition of Scriabin's Fantasie sounds heavenly and it brings me to tears. I thought I had found a hidden treasure. So I got interested in his music.

I really wanted to listen to his performance live and finally my wish was granted in Sicily. The stage was set in the open-air atrium of a historical palace. Sandro's parents, old friends and even his fans who flew from New York were there.

Sandro's playing was constantly stable and passionate. And the venue had good acoustics as it was surrounded by buildings. However, he had to endure many challenges. The piano was a Steinway Hamburg, but Sandro said that it was not the ideal one for that particular Rachmaninoff's concerto. So he had to "fight" against the piano until he hurt his fingertips.

And, sometimes unexpected things happen in outdoor concerts. I heard a cat meow on the first night and a screech of a sea gull on the third night. Well, that was all right. On the second night, all the people who attended the concert heard some exotic music and singing from nowhere during the concert. It really annoyed us. On the third night, we heard the noisy music again unpleasantly. It even interrupted the conductor to go into the second movement after the first movement. I really worried about Sandro's concentration but he didn't lose it. After some intermission, the concerto was continued. Sandro and the orchestra learned quite a lot from each other for the past few days and the third night was excellent.

Sandro's playing was passionate but he always kept his composure. He cherished each note and let it flow as a beautiful music. He never tried to inflame the audience with an artificial manner. He looked like he was just facing the music to express the romanticism and the lyricism of Rachmaninoff. Eventually, he received a lot of applause and bravos from the audience.

The audience asked him to perform an encore on each night. On the first night, he played Gluck-Sgambati: Melodie from "Orpheus". It was so romantic that the audience was fascinated. On the second night, he played Chopin's Souvenir de Paganini. On the third night, Verdi-Liszt "Rigoletto" Paraphrase. This piece revealed that he was really able to let the piano sing. All the audience knew that Sandro is a real virtuoso.

These three nights were not enough for me. Sandro left me wanting more! A lot of bravos to Sandro from me!!!

サンドロ・ルッソさんは7月4日、5日、6日の三夜連続で、シチリア交響楽団のサマーツアーのソリストとして、Tomasz Bugaj氏の指揮の下、シチリア島のパレルモにあるAtrio Biblioteca Comunale（公立図書館のアトリウムにおける屋外コンサート）で、ラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲第三番を演奏されました。
